Our goal is to plan, design and fundraise for Youth Park, at the heart of which will be a 5000 square foot concrete skateboarding, BMX and in-line skating facility, at a cost of about $195,000. We hope to have construction begin in 2009. The design process is underway by New Line Skateparks and we would like your feedback on their first draft. After that, it is just a matter of raising the funds.

Youth Park design, location & fundraising are interconnected. The design is limited only by the budget and what the physical location will allow, but it must be designed by professional designers with input from the people (especially youth) who will use the park. The decision on the location of the Youth Park was made with the involvement of youth and adults from the community, landowners, the municipalities and other stakeholders.
We evaluated 23 different possible locations using a set of objective criteria. After a thorough public process, final approval was granted by Town Council on April 21, 2008, for the location of the Youth Park: adjacent to the parking lot for the French Basin Trail on Prince Albert Road (Highway 1).
From the beginning almost two years ago, ASYPS has put forth the following minimum specifications for a Youth Park design:
After careful consideration, ASYPS has chosen to pursue a permanent, concrete facility.
Concrete skateparks...
A concrete skatepark is a smart, long-term solution for communities making this investment in the health & recreation of their young people.
A concrete skatepark that is well designed and constructed will be virtually maintenance-free for up to 30 years and be a source of community pride for our youth.
New Line Skateparks is working on a few initial design concepts based on the public meeting that was held in May. Many things were discussed including the potential thematic concepts for the park. Fort Anne and built-heritage was mentioned, as well as the railway and trains. The Youth Park is located at the doorstep of the Annapolis Royal Marsh, so perhaps an organic nature theme would be nice.
Local artists are interested in opening their studios to the youth to have them participate in creating something special for the park. We can also combine themes by giving a nod to the Acadians with a thatched-roof shelter and perhaps some other natural building techniques such as wattle & daub (sticks & mud).
